4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUILDING A WEBSITE
4. KNOW THE LANGUAGE
I realize that most if not all of you won't know what I mean when I say 'the difference between PHP and .NET' or 'open-source vs. windows-based'. I don't expect to change that today, but I do want to impress upon you how important it is that you know how your website is constructed.
Another friend of mine, Dr. Michael Walsh, Chiropractor, was telling me about a chiropractic school who had someone start a website and then vanish without finishing it. They called around and found a local company in Flint who said, 'hey, no problem, we will finish the website and have it running for you soon'.
However, a couple of weeks later, during which time the school was losing money and potential students by not having their admission and class information online, they found out that this local company would have to start over from scratch with their website. Also, this was going to cost them thousands of dollars, much of which they had already spent on the partially finished site that they had.
Had they known that their site was coded using php, which is an open source language, and that the company they were working with has only windows servers and cannot house a website that has been built with php, weeks of their time would not have been wasted.
