4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUILDING A WEBSITE
At 14, I was learning how to code web pages on my own. Now, I often talk to business owners who don’t want to pay for a website, because they have a 13 year old nephew who will do it for free. When I see the results that they end up with, I am very glad that in college I learned the importance of web standards, of organizing websites for ease of use, of testing sites across various browsers so they are user friendly, and of coding for accessibility for those with sight and hearing disabilities. Over the years working in this field, I have developed a passion for educating people in ways that can help them to maximize their online potential.
Like the way my dad educated me about the importance of changing the oil in my car, I want to give you a few pointers about website design to prepare you for the time when you are putting one together.
1. CONTENT IS KEY
First of all, all of us should know that good copy is the biggest selling point in all advertising. Having a great look is important, of course – to begin with, you have to grab the attention of your potential customer before they have read one word.
But to KEEP that attention, you MUST have good content. Make sure your site is helpful and useful to those who visit it. If you go above and beyond to help educate your potential customers about the thing you know best, you will impress them with how much you care, build their trust, and make a name for yourself as a leader in your field.
